Collection: Preparation with the Bialetti

Coffee for the Bialetti: aromatic, full-bodied, and roasted in Freiburg

The Bialetti, stovetop espresso maker, or moka pot is one of the simplest ways to prepare a strong and aromatic coffee at home. The key to a great result is not only the grind, water volume, and temperature, but above all, using the right coffee beans.

In our coffee roastery in Freiburg, we carefully select high-quality green coffees and roast them gently. Medium roasts are particularly well-suited for preparation in a Bialetti, as they combine body and sweetness with a greater variety of aromas.

In this way, alongside classic notes of chocolate and caramel, delicate fruit, berry, or spicy flavors can also emerge in the cup. It is precisely this balance that makes the stovetop pot so exciting: it delivers a concentrated coffee while simultaneously allowing much of the individual character of the beans used to shine through.

Which coffee beans are suitable for the Bialetti?

In principle, you can use different roast levels in a Bialetti. However, medium espresso roasts are particularly versatile. They offer more body than many light filter roasts, while retaining more sweetness, fruit, and complexity than very dark espresso beans.

The Bialetti operates with significantly less pressure than a portafilter machine. The result is therefore not a classic espresso, but a strong, concentrated coffee with its own unique character.

If you prefer something particularly chocolatey and intense, you can opt for stronger roasts. If, on the other hand, you would like to discover caramel, subtle sweetness, fruit, or spicy aromas, medium roasts are a particularly interesting choice.

At Schwarzwild, you will find various coffees that are excellently suited for preparation with a Bialetti or stovetop espresso maker.

Medium roast sampler pack: discover various coffees for the Bialetti

Would you like to find out which coffee best suits your Bialetti and your personal taste? Then our espresso sampler pack with medium roasts offers a great starting point.

Included are Wilde Hilde, Colombia Casa Verde, and Brazil Capim Branco. All three coffees showcase different facets of modern medium espresso roasts and are explicitly suitable for stovetop coffee makers and Bialetti pots alike.

Compared to very dark espresso roasts, these coffees possess greater aromatic complexity. In addition to chocolatey and caramel notes, you may also encounter subtle fruit and a slightly more perceptible acidity.

Especially with a Bialetti, this allows you to easily compare the influence that origin, processing, and roasting have on the flavor profile.

This sampler pack is therefore particularly suitable if you are not looking exclusively for a strong, dark coffee, but would like to discover the flavor diversity of the Bialetti.

Brazil Capim Branco – Caramel, red berries and subtle sweetness

The Brasil Capim Branco is a 100% Arabica from the Brazilian growing region of Cerrado Mineiro. The coffee is grown on Ismael José de Andrade's Finca Capim Branco and is processed as a natural.

Thanks to its medium roast, it combines a smooth, sweet cup profile with aromas of caramel, red berries, and a subtle sweetness.

This combination is particularly exciting in a Bialetti: the concentrated brewing method highlights the caramel sweetness, while the fruity notes add extra complexity to the cup.

The Brasil Capim Branco is therefore a great choice if you like your stovetop coffee to be aromatic and balanced, but don't want to miss out on pleasant fruity notes.

India Monsooned Malabar – spicy, full-bodied and earthy

Our India Monsooned Malabar presents itself quite differently. This 100% Arabica originates from Hoysala Coffee & Spices in India and is processed using the so-called monsooning method.

In terms of flavor, spicy, full-bodied, and earthy notes take center stage. We also give this coffee a medium roast, and it is expressly suitable for a variety of preparation methods.

In a Bialetti, the Monsooned Malabar develops a great deal of body and an intense mouthfeel. Its spicy aroma makes it particularly interesting for anyone who prefers a bold coffee but does not necessarily want to reach for a very dark espresso roast.

As such, it offers an exciting counterpoint to the fruitier coffees in this selection.

Our Wilde Hilde combines Arabica coffees from Brazil and El Salvador. It consists of 100% Arabica and is medium roasted.

The result is a harmonious cup profile with chocolatey and sweet aromas, a full body, and a pleasant, light fruity note. The Brazilian coffee provides sweetness and body, while the coffee from El Salvador adds extra fruitiness.

This makes Wilde Hilde particularly versatile for the Bialetti. It combines classic, easily accessible espresso flavors with enough fruit and complexity to remain exciting even when drunk black.

If you are looking for a well-balanced coffee for a stovetop espresso maker that is neither extremely dark nor particularly fruit-forward, Wilde Hilde is a great choice.

How to brew with a Bialetti: grind size, water, and temperature

Even with a stovetop espresso maker, the right preparation determines how much aroma from your coffee beans ends up in your cup.

The grind size for the Bialetti should be fine, though not quite as fine as for a classic espresso from a portafilter machine. If the coffee is ground too finely, the water struggles to pass through the coffee bed, and the taste quickly becomes bitter or unpleasantly intense.

Fill the bottom chamber of the Bialetti with water to just below the safety valve. Then, loosely add the ground coffee to the filter basket and level it off.

Important: Do not tamp the coffee in the Bialetti. Unlike with a portafilter, the coffee grounds should not be pressed down firmly.

Then place the stovetop maker on the stove over medium heat. As soon as the coffee flows evenly into the upper chamber, keep an eye on the Bialetti. Once it begins to bubble or hiss strongly, the extraction is practically finished.

Remove the stovetop maker from the heat in time to prevent the coffee from being heated unnecessarily. This helps you avoid overly bitter or burnt flavor notes.

Gentle roasting in our Freiburg coffee roastery

Good coffee begins with selecting the right raw coffee beans. At our roastery in Freiburg, we pay close attention to the origin, processing, and flavor profile of the beans.

Through a gentle and controlled roasting process, caramel, chocolatey, spicy, or fruity aromas develop depending on the coffee. The goal is not to roast every coffee as dark as possible, but to bring out its individual character. Schwarzwild describes its coffees as directly traded, gently roasted, and carefully packaged.

From the selection of the raw coffee to the final packaging, we treat coffee as a high-quality natural product. This results in roasts with a balanced interplay of body, sweetness, aroma, and intensity.

For Freiburg and the region, this means: artisanally roasted coffee from a local coffee roastery – carefully processed with a clear focus on quality and taste.
